The Gospels are full of stories of Jesus sharing meals with disciples, friends, and even tax collectors and Pharisees. In one moment he's multiplying bread to feed a whole crowd, next he's relaxing with his inner circle, and then he's telling curious elites stories about even greater banquets. These stories culminate in "the last supper" on the night before his crucifixion; a meal he invites his followers to continue eating long after his resurrection. Join us during the season of Lent, as we explore the rich imagery and symbolism of the table -- and how it speaks to our lives today.
🤔Sermon Reflection: From its earliest days, Christianity has centered on communal gatherings around a table, a symbolic space where Jesus is recognized as the host. He intentionally shared meals with those marginalized by society, a practice considered radical in His time. He actively sought out these individuals, inviting them to follow Him, demonstrating His desire to connect with those others rejected. This highlights God’s universal love, a concept that can be challenging when we consider it extends to those we might find objectionable. Recognizing our own imperfections, we see that Jesus pursues us all, often showing particular interest in those who seem least interested in Him. Who do we exclude from our metaphorical table? Who are those Jesus is pursuing that we might overlook or criticize? Who will we choose to invite to the table? 🕊️🙏🍽️
